It is no secret that as we age, our bodies change. As women, we have to work a little harder to protect our bodies, stay healthy, and keep our skin from breaking down. A simple search on Google will provide you with millions of routines or expensive products claiming to be the secret to keeping your youth. Of course, you can go ahead and spend a fortune of your money and time trying to stay young when we should be embracing the fact that we are in one of the most beautiful phases of our lives.

While promoting your natural beauty, regardless of your age, here are a few of the best skincare routines for women over 40:

One of the ultimate rules for skincare, when you have reached your 40s, is to refrain from going to bed with makeup on.  Even mascara or a little concealer can do damage to your skin when left to settle while you sleep. When you are in your twenties, it is much easier for your skin to bounce back from a few nights without extra care, however, as we age, the collagen in our skin breaks down far more quickly. It is this collagen that prevents wrinkles, spots, acne, and loss of elasticity.
Use a good quality skin cleanser. We hope you are not using bar soap or your daughter’s acne cleanser. If you can find samples and reach out for advice from your local beautician, you will realize what a difference it makes for your skin. If you can, find a cleanser that foams as it is more likely to get the skin deeper in your pores.

Moisturize continually throughout the day, but do not worry about purchasing the most expensive creams. Don’t use any kind of lotion, however, make sure it matches your skin type as well as has added antioxidants/vitamins such as vitamin A or C. Find a day serum that has SPF against UVA and B to protect against sun damage or has an acidic element to help prevent wrinkles. If you can, find a nighttime serum with retinol, as you’ll ensure the moisturizer has extended time to do its magic.

It’s time to invest in an eye cream. Around the age of 40 is when the tender skin around our eyes start to lose a lot of its elasticity. Now is the time to start treating this skin to prevent premature aging. We encourage against using the same moisturizer you use on the rest of your face as this skin requires its own ingredients to promote healthy skin.
Listen to your skin and provide it the tender loving care it deserves!
